Top 100 Largest High Schools in America

As school is starting back lots of new high school students are walking the halls of their new high school for the first time, and probably feeling a little overwhelmed by how much bigger high school is than middle school, and how many students there are. It is a big transition to be sure, but odds are, your high school is probably of average size, or at least has fewer students than the Top 100 Largest High Schools in America.

While the average high school size is around 1100-1200 students, to make this list you have to have well over 3000 students at your school to make the cut! Now that’s a lot of book bags, drivers permits, and sneaked-in cellphones!

In this list we break down the Top 100 Largest High Schools in America, as measured by the number of students that attend. Many of these schools are bigger than a lot of colleges!

Is your school on the list? If so, show your school spirit and post a comment, Like this page on Facebook, or throw a shout-out on Twitter with a link! Or, you can click your schools link and throw a shout out in the comment section there.

  1. Michael White says:

Not sure where you got your info from but yor statistics are wrong. You are missing the largest high school in Texas. Also the enrollments of your two largest high schools are grossly exaggerrated.

    • I was going to say….Where are Plano, Plano East and Plano West? I’m pretty sure Odessa and Odessa Permian should be on there too.

      • all the schools you mentioned have less than 3000 enrolled.

        • Except…not. All 3 Plano schools have enrollment of as much as 4000 students, with Plano East coming in at the top with a little over 6000 students. Trust me, I went there; my graduating class was almost 1600 (and you have to figure that there was a fair number of students who didn’t graduate…so yeah. Plano schools are kinda massive)

        • The Plano senior highs also only have 11th and 12th grade. When you factor in their feeder high schools (9th and 10th, two feeders per senior) they each have 5,000+, or in Plano East’s case, 6,000+

        • Plano has <3000, but that's only Jrs and Srs.

Do those Brooklyn schools include Fresh and Sophs?

          If so, poor comparison mechanism.

        • As a Neuqua alumn, I can assure you that this 4397 number for Neuqua’s enrollment is accurate, and being a high school graduate, I feel I’m qualified to claim that 4397 is greater than 3000.

        • No they don’t for the Plano schools, you have to combine them with their feeder schools. So all three have well over 5,000. I would know I live in Plano and go to Plano West. Plus Plano West just expanded.

        • You’re incorrect. Although the stats are wrong, at least several of them have over 3,000 students. Brooklyn Tech for example has 5,450 as of 2013

        • Michael k says:

          With only 2 grades though…

        • Hannah H says:

Plano, East, and West are two year senior high schools. So the 3,000 enrolled are only 11th and 12th grades. If you count the 9th and 10th grades as well it bumps up enrollment to over 6,000 for each school.

        • Zachary Lorenzo says:

Just as a heads up, at least some if the schools mentioned were over 3000 for sure. Plano Senior High and Plano West were over 5000 each, and Plano East barely over 6000. This list honestly appears to have a lot incorrect information and was poorly researched before publishing.

        • Terrie Raymer says:

Not all high schools include 9th thru 12th grade on the same grounds….Broken Arrow High School just combined its 10th grade with the 11th and 12th grades. If you added in the 9th grade Freshman Academy they would be quite large in number. Wikapedia quoted BAHS as having 4610 students and titled them as the largest high school in Oklahoma– but I’m not sure how old that quote is since the Freshman class alone is closer to almost 5000 alone. Rethink your numbers and make sure you are including all four grades in the stats your collecting.

        • Actually, Tom is correct. Odessa HS and the 3 Plano schools have way over 5, 000 students. They should be on here.

        • No they don’t Carmel Highschool legit has 4300

    • Agree, the ones in Lewisville ISD certainly have over 4K students apiece, and aren’t on this list.

    • Jose Prieto says:

Actually, the last one is not exaggerated. Brooklyn Tech does have over 8000 students. I should know, I go there. Making it the largest high school in America

    • hey im from brookyn originally i graduate in 1982 there were 6000 students those numbers are not exaggerated my son graduated from the same school 2003 and there were 8052 students texas happens to be the one the biggest states besides california remember new york city have the most people espeacially brooklyn there are more people in one borough than in your county

  2. So many of these are in Brooklyn! Crazy

  3. You Forgot All 3 Plano Shools Plano Senior at 5180 , Plano East the biggest at 6024, And Plano West 5326 and you undersized Allen HS 5280 Skyline HS 4921 and Galena Park North Shore 4760..

  4. Many of them are exaggerated not be a few hundred but by thousands as a new yorker i have to say Brooklyn Tech does not have 8076 students it only about 5300 and the same goes with fort Hamilton. I don’t know where you are getting the sources but they are incorrect.

    • I’m a Vice President on the Board of Brooklyn Tech (#1). Tech is indeed the largest high school in the United States. But present enrollment is 5,557. The article is from 2011, but even so the numbers are wrong. All the NYC high school enrollments were at their peak for mid-baby boomers (in their high school years from ’67-’77). I know for a fact, the schools listed from #2 – #7 have inflated numbers as well. (e.g., Midwood is around 4,400).

  5. Primavera High School in Arizona has 6000 students, yet aren’t listed.

    http://www.primaveratech.org/Online-High-School.aspx

  6. It’d be nice to get an updated list of the top 100, this list is at least 2 years old.

  7. I agree with Michael White,
The largest highschool in Georgia is Mill Creek, at about 10,000 students. Is this a list of private schools?

  8. DeBragga says:

Allen high is the second largest in Texas, and the largest (Plano East) isn’t even on the list.

  9. Shanela says:

Im surprised only 5 of these are in Florida.

  10. These Stats are wrong. Brooklyn Tech does NOT have over 8000 kids. It has about 5300 AT MOST, and I should know because I go there. Also, Murrow is about 4000, and Tottenville is sure as hell not 7000 kids.

  11. These Stats are wrong. Brooklyn Tech does NOT have over 8000 kids. It has about 5300 AT MOST, and I should know because I go there. Also, Murrow is about 4000, and Tottenville is sure as hell not 7000 kids.

  12. Plymouth-Canton Educational Park has 8000..

  13. You forget Penn Highschool in Mishawaka Indiana! It has 3577 students!

  14. The schools need to get better nd these kids need to quit fighting

  15. This is wrong and overly exaggerated brooklyn tech has 5,400 kids. And is not the largest high school in the us

  16. Jenna Lavin says:

The statistic for Brooklyn Tech is wrong. I am a recent graduate and Tech currently enrolled approximately 6000 students for the 2013-2014 academic year.

  17. Hey, you might want to check your numbers. Checking your #1 school on your alleged data source only gives 5,141 kids (http://goo.gl/OyS0LG). As an alum I think I’d notice if BTech ballooned by 3000 kids

  18. I go to brooklyn tech and we do NOT have 8000 kids. The actual student population is around 5500. You’re stats aren’t completely accurate wrong, and I have a feeling its not just my school that you messed up on.

  19. I go to brooklyn tech and we do NOT have 8000 kids. The actual student population is around 5500. You’re stats aren’t completely accurate, and I have a feeling its not just my school that you messed up on.

  20. Sammy Mohamed says:

According the NYC department of education, as of a few weeks ago the enrollment at Brooklyn Technical was 5,392. http://schools.nyc.gov/SchoolPortals/13/K430/AboutUs/Statistics/register.htm

According to Brooklyn Tech’s own page, the enrollment was about 5,129 in 2011. Given the rate of increases in enrollment (even without considering retention), a liberal estimate of where the school would be now would still be less than 6,000.

There are similar data issues with the other schools in Brooklyn (for god knows what reason), but I felt personally obligated to comment about BTHS as an alumni.

  21. I think Sachem East or Sachem North HS in Long Island, NY should be on this list somewhere.

  22. i just find it funny it has
“#10” and then proceeds with “10th largest school in america”
“#9” “9th largest school in america”
“#8” “8th largest school in america”

…i think we get the way they’re ranked, don’t you?

  23. Cardozo does not, and will probably never have over 5000 kids unless they renovate the school and make it big enough to hold that much students.
It currently only has around 4000.

  24. you forgot john bowne high school in flushing

    • Not sure about the info source, but i work at tottenville high school…sept 2013 the pop was just about 4,000. Fort Hamilton is about 4800. Bklyn tech def does not have more students than either of these two

  25. I checked 5 of the schools in NYC that are on your list and found that your numbers are off by thousands based on 2011-2012 records. One school, Grover Cleveland, only had 2069 students, not enough to make the list, and Brooklyn Tech had 5332.

  26. What’s weird is that the source that the author posted and supposedly got their numbers from says BkTech has ~5100. So now I’m really clueless as to how (s)he got 8000+…

  27. Cherry Creek HS in Colorado has 3678 students – not on this list.

  28. Who Cares? says:

You forgot about Chinas schools fool.

  29. I’m guessing they get these numbers from 4 years of consecutive graduations…although the school may not have an enrollment of 8000 total students, they may have hade 4 years of graduations consisting of 2000 seniors each year.

  30. Lsmunson@yahoo.com says:

Tottenvilles numbers are way off too…according to their register they have slightly less than 4000….

  31. I went to #3 Tottenville…Sometimes it was hard just to walk down the hall during class passing. Crazy. Then there was the E. Wing…lol

  32. WHY would one be proud of this fact?!?!?! My daughters go to Hazleton #92 and the huge size is unmanageable for our admin and a total detriment to a solid education.

  33. Laura Michele Stevens says:

Tottenville High School Class of 1993! When I graduated there were 3800 students. My how times have changed! GO PIRATES!!!! <3

  34. Check your figures – your published link to Tottenville HS shows student enrollment at 3954, not 7700…

  35. Edward R. Murrow has 4100 students not over 7000

  36. You forgot sachem school in lake ronkonkoma, ny

It’s so big it needs two hs, one called north the other south

    It has over 7000 kids

  37. Wrongo. Tottenville can’t be the third largest high school. We only have 4000 students on record.

  38. Ellen Levitt says:

These numbers for NYC schools are absolutely ridiculous. What is the source? Completely off! Murrow and Midwood do not have in excess of 4000. No way Brooklyn Tech has 8K!

  39. Brooklyn Tech’s own website says it as 5,450 as of Jan. 17, 2014. Where’s the fact checking? Try again.
    http://www.bths.edu/school_data.jsp

  40. New Trier isn’t on that list and it has to be one of the biggest, if not the biggest in IL.

  41. This seems pretty outdated, I know schools in my area that have at least 4000 students and they aren’t even on here.

  42. Right here, it says Brooklyn Tech has 5450 students

    http://schools.nyc.gov/SchoolPortals/13/K430/AboutUs/Statistics/register.htm

  43. How did you forget New Utrecht High School, Brooklyn NY (Welcome back Kotter)

  44. This is wrong. Morton HS in Chicago actually has 8,362 students and that is real stats. You can check the school report card. https://iirc.niu.edu/District.aspx?DistrictID=06016201017

  45. Great Oak HS in Temecula, CA has 4000 plus kids enrolled.

  46. Just-sayin says:

I know I’m late to a three year old article, but Broken Arrow HS in Broken Arrow, OK has 4600. That’s one off the top of my head. I’m sure there are many others around the nation.

  47. Wando High School in Charleston, SC has at least 3,688 students and is not on this list!

  48. Jeff Harris says:

Your numbers are totally off. Edward R Murrow HS, where I taught for more than 25 years, has about 4,000 students -not over 7,000; and Brooklyn Tech has only about 5,000.

  49. juan velez says:

cypress has 4,600 not in the 3000s

  50. These are awful stats. Even Wando in South Carolina has 5000 students.

  51. YOUR INFORMATION IS VERY WRONG

  52. wfejbwijjwbdwn says:

    where is pcep?

  53. Wando High School has almost 4000 and we’re not on here…

  54. You forgot Elizabeth highschool in nj

  55. Where are these enrollment figures from? They seem very exaggerated.

  56. Broken Arrow High School claims to have over 15,000 students. I can prove this to be real because I live in oklahoma, where it’s located. It’s gotta be the biggest damn school I’ve ever seen, which is a lot coming from me because my school only has about 1200 kids.

  57. You didn’t include Carmel high school from Carmel Indiana, which has around 5,000 students.

  58. The largest high school in Georgia has 3809 and it’s not on the list?

  59. THIS IS NOTHING TO BE PROUD OF OR BOAST ABOUT….EVERY SCHOOL ON THIS LIST SHOULD FEEL LIKE A PIECE OF SH!T FOR HAVING THIS MANY STUDENTS IN ONE PLACE…UNLESS OF COURSE THERE IS ENOUGH SQ FT TO ACCOMMODATE THE MASSES, AND, EVEN MORE IMPORTANTLY, THE FACULTY TO SUPPORT THE WORKLOAD. EVERY SCHOOL SHOULD ASPIRE TO AT LEAST HAVE ONE TEACHER FOR EVERY 25 STUDENTS—MAX!! OBVIOUSLY THE LOWER THE RATIO, THE BETTER, BUT THIS SHOULD BE THE VERY BOTTOM LINE STANDARD.
